In the late 1990’s Elmbridge Council agreed a development brief urging the comprehensive regeneration of the area rather than piecemeal development.
The station was opened on the 2 February 1849. The line extended north of
the station
to a coal depot and locomotive turntable on the present Jolly Boatman
site.
In the 1950’s, the end of the railway lines were drawn back and the Jolly
Boatman
pub was built.
Despite its prominent location, the Jolly Boatman site has been derelict for almost
30 years and in 2003, was voted “one of Britain’s worst wasted spaces” by listeners
of Radio 4’s Today programme. The Hampton Court station building is also in need
of refurbishment.
